KOLPING INDIA

Kolping India society is formed to set up a new and positive social order deep rooted in Love, Truth, Justice, Brotherhood and Cooperation and Communion with God. To achieve this goal the society made collective efforts to improve the capacity as well as the standard of living of the marginalized sections of the society. To generate a positive change in the life of the poor people the society is using the method of community organization and capacity building programmes for the beneficiaries to find out additional income to improve their living standards. All the activities carried out by the Kolping society is based on the following objectives
Objectives

  • To help people especially the poor to live in freedom from hunger, injustice and lead a dignified human life befitting the creation.
  • To promote groups of the target people on the basis of the principles of Blessed Kolping and motivate them for savings.
  • To implement, various developmental and welfare programs for the group members.
  • To enable the group members to attain self-sufficiency in all the spheres such as spiritual, economic, cultural and social and to live a community life based on harmony, fraternity and freedom.
To achieve the above said objectives and improve the quality of life of the people the Kolping society has designed a number of activities which are ultimately aimed to achieve better standard of living and high social status to the marginalized sections in the main stream society. The major activities carried out by Kolping India Quilon region in the reporting year is as follows

Micro Savings and Credit:
To initiate savings habit, thrift and credit operation is being promoted among the members of Kolping groups. The savings enable the members to get small loans within the group. Similar to the revolving fund from Kolping India, they also get external support when they grow in savings. The savings and credit program help the members in their emergency and consumption needs.

Capacity Building Program:

Kolping Members are provided with opportunities for learning and capacity building through trainings, seminars and workshops. The topics covered are: basics of group functioning, book keeping, accounts maintenance, leadership qualities, life skill orientation and social issues which need immediate attention and solution.

Income Generation Programme (IGP):
To enable the member beneficiary to plan, organize and execute small income generating projects of their choice, the society provides training and financial support for various IGP programmes. The IGPs are given to individuals and groups. The generated savings lead them to self-sufficiency and self-confidence to build a new society. This gradually improves the standard of living among members.

Financial support for Housing
Decent habitat is the prime index for a better standard of living. It is the primary need of human beings. The housing program aims to improve the living condition and to promote the general welfare of the poor Kolping members. In the year 2012 Kolping Quilon Region supported six member beneficiaries @ Rs 10,000/- as grant and @ Rs.40,000/- as loan. The members are encouraged to collaborate with various Government schemes and other possible sources for additional support to build a better house.

Vocational Training Programme

Under this programme, Youth, especially those who are not able to pursue higher education, unemployed and physically challenged from the Kolping Groups are provided with support. During this reporting year financial support was extended to professional and academic courses till the completion. 22 youths from the member families have been helped to undergo the job oriented vocational trainings and courses.
Membership regularization and renewal of baseline information collection is was going on. To strengthen the programme implementation process the managerial staff were regularly attending the zonal level and national level review meetings and ensuring active participation
